Physalis (or goldenberry) is an exotic plant, whose nutritive and health-improving properties were recognised in South America ages ago, where it is known under the name of “the gold berry of Incas”. At present, goldenberry is grown practically all over the world.
The fruits are very decorative. They ripen inside a flower cup in the form of a lantern. The fruit itself is a small round orange berry of sweet and sour flavour.
Physalis fruits are mainly consumed raw but they can be also used for preserves: jams, confitures, jellies or even fruit cordials.
Also used as an additive to salads and cakes and as a decoration of conventional baked goods.
