Grapefruits were cross-bred from shaddock and sweet orange. It is cultivated in the Caribbean Sea region as well as in other subtropical regions (in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, India, Israel, Turkey and South African countries).

Grapefruit is a citrus fruit of a distinctive sweet and sour, somewhat bitter flavour. The name of fruit comes from grape and fruit, since they grow on trees in a form of grapes. They can be up to 15 cm in diameter and weight about 200-500g. Colour of the peel and the pulp varies. Depending on the variety – it may be yellow, green or red. The most popular varieties include: Star Ruby and Ruby Red.
Grapefruit is a rich source of vitamins and microelements. An average fruit covers daily intake of vitamin C and 1/3 of recommended dose of vitamin A (beta-carotene). It contains also vast amounts of group B vitamins, vitamin E, PP, folic acid, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, manganese and fluorine. This is why grapefruits have strong antibacterial and antiviral properties. It is usually consumed raw, after being peeled.

Grapefruits are used for production of juices, beverages and fruit salads.
