Pomelo, called also the large orange (Citrus maxima) is the largest representative of citrus fruits. It is cultivated in China, Japan and Thailand, while wild pomelo trees grow in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Pomelo is covered with thick (even up to 5 cm) yellow and green peel, with white, yellow or pink crunchy pulp inside. A single fruit reaches even 25 cm in diameter and may weigh even 2 kg. Pomelo tastes similarly to a grapefruit however without its specific bitterness. Pomelo fruits can be stored even up to 4 months.
Pomelo is a citrus fruit with the highest content of vitamin C. It is also a source of fibre, vitamin B6, calcium and magnesium. High content of potassium in pomelo affects also fluid balance in human body, which is a key element of proper muscle functioning. Regular consumption of these fruits enhances the immunity and stimulates digestive and urinary systems. In addition, it has a positive effect on hair and skin condition.
Pomelo fruit is delicious when consumed raw and its pulp is a perfect ingredient of fruit or even vegetable salads. Freshly squeezed juice, both tasty and healthy, can be also used as an ingredient of sauces and pickles.
