Courgette is a variety of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) and originates from Mexico and South America. It was introduced to Poland from Italy, which is where its name – from the Italian word “zucchinia” (small pumpkin) comes from.
Courgette is a plant of bush-type habit and large, decorative leaves with long petioles. Both fruits and flowers are edible. Courgette is a valuable and rich source of mineral salts: potassium, iron and magnesium as well as vitamins C, K, PP and B1 and beta-carotene. Resistance to heavy metal accumulation belongs to its greatest benefits.
Courgette is a light vegetable of mild taste. It can be served raw, fried, baked, stewed and cooked.
